In order to achieve the best results from your surgery, speed your recovery, and allow your hospital course to go as smoothly as possible, it is important for you to prepare your gastrointestinal tract prior to your admission to the hospital.
You may eat a regular breakfast and lunch on the day prior to your hospital admission. You will be given a prescription for GoLYTELY in order to cleanse out the intestinal tract. GoLYTELY produces a watery stool that will clean out the intestines. At about 5:00 PM on the day prior to admission, please drink 8 ounces of GoLYTELY every 10-15 minutes until the 4 liter jug is finished. No solid food should be consumed during the 3 to 4 hour period before drinking the solution. he first bowel movement usually begins about one hour after the start of GoLYTELY administration. Nausea, abdominal fullness and bloating may occur. Only a clear liquid diet may be taken after the GoLYTELY administration. Juice, jello, tea, and broth are permitted in unlimited amounts.
Additionally, on the day prior to your scheduled surgery you will need to take two oral antibiotics that will be prescribed to you. These function to help sterilize the intestinal tract. These antibiotics are Erythromycin base and Neomycin. You will need to take one gram of each antibiotic at 1:00 PM, again at 2:00 PM, and again at 11:00 PM. Do not take any further oral intake after midnight the night prior to your operation.
