Bergen Urological/New Jersey Urology is pleased to announce the 2019 release of Dr. Andrew Siegel’s new book: PROSTATE CANCER 20/20: A Practical Guide to Understanding Management Options for Patients and Their Families, published by Rogue Wave Press.

PROSTATE CANCER 20/20: A Practical Guide to Understanding Management Options for Patients and Their Families

Prostate cancer is the most common male malignancy—excluding skin cancer—in most western populations and the second leading cause of cancer death in the USA. One of nine American men will develop it.

Dr. Siegel’s new book started out as a brochure he wrote out of frustration from the lack of a streamlined, practical, and trustworthy resource to help patients and their families navigate the challenges of prostate cancer diagnosis and management. He made it available in the office, and many patients found it helpful.

Over the last decade, an incredible number of advances in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment have occurred – refinements in screening; prevention; sophisticated new imaging; bone health; genetic and genomic testing; the blossoming of the era of active surveillance; technical progress in surgical, radiation and focal therapies; and the availability of numerous new medicines for advanced prostate cancer.

So, he decided to expand his booklet into an updated, comprehensive book called Prostate Cancer 20/20. “20/20” is a nod to the year looming in the near future, signifying the up-to-date content, and also to refer to “20/20” vision, the clarity and perspective that he wishes to help each reader achieve.

While there’s no substitute for a thorough urological consultation, time constraints rarely allow for an exhaustive review of everything you need to know. Because prostate cancer is potentially life-threatening issue, emphasis is generally placed on curing the disease – while counseling and education about urinary and sexual side effects are often given lower priority. This book is meant as a supplement and complement to your urology consult, an all-inclusive source explaining diagnosis, treatment and side effects.

While it’s primarily beneficial for newly diagnosed patients looking for answers, the book was also written for:

  • Patients who relapse following primary treatment
  • Those with complications following treatments
  • Family members of prostate cancer patients
  • Anyone interested in learning more about prostate cancer

Every case of prostate cancer is unique and has a variable biological behavior, which creates the need for treatment that is individualized and nuanced. The bewildering array of management options can cause confusion for the patient grappling with determining the best approach. Dr. Siegel’s aim is to guide you, impartially reviewing the pros and cons of every option. Being informed empowers you and your loved ones to be actively involved in decisions about your care, enabling you to choose the treatment best suited to your situation.
